History

A second-tier commercial and industrial city at the end of the nineteenth century, Detroit was home to machine and stove manufacturing, cigar making, pharmaceuticals, and food production before later being home to 125 auto companies and Motown. The name "Detroit" comes from when the French established a settlement along “le détroit," or "the strait," in 1701.
